Vivian Kloosterman, Professional Engineer
Vivian is a Chartered Professional Engineer who is passionate about environmental engineering and learning. Vivian established VK Environmental in 1989 to provide a specialist service committed to supplying innovative solutions to client’s problems. She has 30 years professional experience specialising in sustainability and natural resource management.
As well as being the Managing Director of VK Environmental, her corporate governance skills include directorships in both the private and public sectors. She was appointed by the Minister of Commerce to the Chartered Professional Engineers Council (2003-2010) and the Standards Council of NZ (2005-2012) and served 7 year terms on both Boards. She featured in Unlimited Magazines (2002) 150 most powerful women in New Zealand business. In addition to her role as a chartered professional engineer, Vivian is involved in transferring and sharing her 30 years of accumulated business and professional skills through the medium of online learning.
Vivian’s specialist technical expertise includes project management and design for wastewater treatment and disposal systems, water supplies and landfills. Specialist publications have included national guidelines on Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment. She has also implemented Environmental Management Systems to ISO 14001 for major Contractors to assist them in effectively identifying and managing environmental compliance requirements.
Strategic planning and project management feature strongly in her work portfolio. She has particular skills and a proven record of accomplishment in public consultation and obtaining resource consents for complex projects in the natural resource, water, wastewater and solid waste sectors. The ability to co-ordinate multi-disciplinary teams and strong skills in building relationships with local groups, the general public and industry has underpinned her success in managing and implementing multifaceted projects. This combined with the ability to take a wide perspective and work closely with Clients to provide innovative solutions suited to their needs and constraints has prepared her well to become one of our leading subject matter experts.
Ross Bauld, Engineering Management Consultant
Ross is a professional civil engineer who held a number of senior positions in construction and operations management during the 1970s. He has supervised the construction and managed the operation of large wastewater treatment facilities in New Zealand and at the time the largest landfill operation.
A change of direction in the 1980s saw Ross as the General Manager of a number of companies in the construction industry with involvement in both civil engineering works and high rise building. During that time he developed an interest in company re-engineering and performance improvement. He has successfully undertaken performance improvement and strategic repositioning roles in numerous companies.
In 1992, Ross graduated with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Auckland and spent the 1990′s managing change in local government. During the early 2000s he spent time as a General Manager in local government and managed the process of establishing local government owned companies for the maintenance and operations of water, wastewater, properties, maritime activities and airports. More recently he has been working as a private consultant specialising in procurement and alternative tendering and contracting options. We are fortunate to have his experience and enthusiasm available as a subject matter expert and course facilitator for our Finance Courses.
Nigel Mark-Brown, Civil Engineer
Nigel is the course facilitator and subject matter expert for our soon to be released environmental online courses. He is a degree qualified civil engineer, a member of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand, and a Chartered Professional Engineer in New Zealand.
Nigel has over 35 years experience in a broad range of environmental and civil engineering projects including managing and leading major projects from inception to implementation. Sustainable stormwater management and Low Impact Development (LID), flood assessment and reporting, and roof water harvesting and re-use, are his particular specialties. This has involved engineering for water supply resilience in the event of disruption to supply, and the design of rain gardens, swales, filters, wetlands, detention dams and tanks, and soakage systems for stormwater management. He has authored a number of articles on stormwater management.
Auckland University has engaged Nigel to lecture and teach courses on assessing environmental effects. He has also presented a number of seminars to practicing engineers and planners on infrastructure and development, their effects on water systems and how to manage those effects.
Nigel is also skilled in in assessing, designing and reviewing infrastructure and development projects to avoid, remedy and mitigate their adverse effects on surface and ground water systems. This has included preparing and presenting expert evidence at Consent and Environment Court Hearings and at EPA hearings for projects of national significance.
Due to his engineering and environmental expertise Nigel is accredited to act as an Independent Commissioner who is called in to Consent Hearings to provide specialist expertise particularly where issues surrounding an application are complex or highly technical.

Bruce Manson, Planner, Mediator and Arbitrator
Bruce is a Resource Planning and Management Consultant and a qualified mediator, advocate and facilitator. Bruce holds a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Dispute Resolution); is a full member of the New Zealand Planning Institute and an Affiliate of the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand. He is a graduate of the Stanford Executive Program – Stanford University Business School, California.
Bruce has held senior management positions in one of New Zealand’s largest companies and was regarded as one of the top industrial relations practitioners in New Zealand at that time. He has been associated with management of major projects such as gas lines, power stations and pulp and paper mills.
From 1989 to 2000 he held senior management roles in local government with responsibility for plan preparation and processes and the development of strategic plans. He has wide experience in the fields of environmental consent applications and Hearings and is familiar with the procedures and has presented as an expert witness on a number of occasions.
His experience in and understanding of both the private and public sector shows him to be an excellent subject matter expert in areas of resource management; strategic planning; advocacy; mediation and negotiation; and consultation. We feel privileged to have him working alongside us.
We find there is no replacement for experience and our course creators have plenty.
